Be Known Before You’re Needed

One of the most common conversations we have with local business owners isn’t about creating the perfect advertisement.

It’s about creating familiarity.

The businesses that consistently grow in Northern Utah aren’t always the ones offering the lowest prices or the biggest promotions. More often than not, they’re the companies people already know, already trust, and already feel comfortable calling. They strive for top of mind awareness.

That philosophy has guided successful marketing for decades.

Now, new research from EMARKETER reinforces exactly why it works. In partnership with Reddit, EMARKETER surveyed more than 1,000 U.S. consumers and found that today’s shoppers spend more time researching purchases, consult multiple sources before making decisions, and ultimately place the greatest value on brands and people they trust.

Consumers Don’t Buy the Way They Used To

Consumers aren’t making snap decisions anymore.

According to the study, 43.5% of consumers say they spend more time researching purchases than they did just two years ago, while nearly 28% say they increasingly buy based on recommendations from people in similar situations.

That longer decision-making process changes how businesses should think about marketing.

Instead of asking, “Will this advertisement generate customers today?”

A better question might be: “Will this advertisement help someone remember my business when they finally need me?”

Because that moment may come next week…

…or six months from now.

Familiarity Creates Confidence

One finding stood out above almost everything else.

EMARKETER found that brand familiarity was one of the biggest reasons consumers felt confident they had made the right purchase.

That should encourage every local business owner. People don’t usually begin searching from scratch. They begin with businesses they’ve already heard about.

The plumber they’ve heard advertised during their morning commute.

The financial advisor whose name they’ve seen on Cache Valley Daily.

The home improvement company sponsoring high school football broadcasts.

The local retailer they’ve heard community members talk about for years.

Those businesses have already earned something incredibly valuable: Recognition.

Awareness Comes Before Sales

One of the biggest misconceptions in marketing is believing advertising should immediately produce a customer every time someone hears or sees an ad.

Sometimes it does. Often it doesn’t.

Instead, every message adds another layer of familiarity.

Someone hears your commercial on KVNU while driving to work.

Later they see your display ad while reading Cache Valley Daily.

A few weeks later they notice your social media content.

Months afterward, they ask a friend for a recommendation—and your business is one of the names they recognize.

Marketing doesn’t always create an immediate sale. It creates confidence before the sale ever happens.

Trust Is Built Across Every Platform

The EMARKETER research also found consumers are checking multiple sources before making important purchasing decisions. They compare reviews, search results, recommendations, expert opinions, and conversations before committing.

That’s why consistency matters.

Businesses that maintain a presence across radio, digital advertising, social media, websites, and community involvement don’t simply generate more impressions. They reinforce trust.

Every interaction tells consumers:

“We’re established.”

“We’re active.”

“We’re part of this community.”

Authenticity Wins

Another important takeaway from the report is that consumers increasingly value honesty over perfection.

Rather than looking for polished marketing language, they appreciate balanced conversations, real experiences, and authentic customer feedback. The report concludes that marketers should focus on long-term credibility instead of trying to control every conversation.

That’s particularly true for local businesses. Your reputation isn’t built by one commercial. It’s built by every customer interaction, every review you respond to, every community event you support, and every promise you keep.

Advertising simply gives more people the opportunity to discover that reputation.

Marketing Is a Long-Term Investment

Perhaps the biggest lesson from this research is that successful marketing isn’t about convincing someone to buy today. It’s about making sure you’re the first business they think of when tomorrow’s need arises.

That’s why we often tell our clients it’s better to be known and loved before being needed and sought.

The businesses that invest consistently in building awareness are often the same businesses consumers remember when it’s finally time to make a decision.

And that’s exactly what effective local marketing is designed to accomplish.
